I had an interesting and non hostile chat with a dairy farmer last Sunday, as you do. He said he didn't like one of our signs - 'They trust us, we betray them', depicting a cow on its way to slaughter. I pointed out how some farms take away calves from their mothers, and how male chicks are killed after a few days, also we kill most animals very young in their potential lives - that for me is like betrayal. He seemed uncomfortable acknowledging this point, he did not have a counter argument.
We discussed how a lot of dairy farms are now closing down due to debt, and he added 'too low prices for milk' are another reason. I told him about how some farms are moving away from cows and instead growing plants, with the help of the Vegan Society grow green projects, also farmers have an opportunity as Veganism grows to farm plants, say for milk or crops.
Recently I have been thinking about the words cow's milk, and specifically that possessive apostrophe. The milk of a cow or any animal, belongs to that animal. It's cow's milk not milk for humans.
Its time to evolve, lets stop drinking cow's milk and things that are made with cow's milk. We start by buying something else!
